Who is God like? V. 40 God anointed Paul with the Holy Sprit and allowed him to deliver His will. Paul¡¯s recommendation to live a single life was not like God¡¯s commands that were given to the prophets of the Old Testament. However, he testified that his recommendation about a single life style was from the wisdom of God, and inspired by the Holy Spirit. Meditate on God¡¯s will, which will lead us to hear the word of God, like Paul delivered.
What lesson is God teaching me? Vv. 29-31 Christians need to live their present life faithfully, but at the same time they should live a life preparing for the future. There will be time when we will not have what we have now. Therefore, do not cling to what you are enjoying now, with the misunderstanding that those things mean everything. Instead, make your life purpose to seek the kingdom of God.
Vv. 32-35 A married couple needs to think on how to please their partners, but an unmarried man needs to think on how to please the Lord. An unmarried Christian is able to use more time and energy for ministry than a married Christian. However, in some cases, an unmarried man can be more hindered than a married man in serving the Lord (7:2, 9). Therefore, our whole-hearted commitment to the Lord is what is important, not our marital status.
Vv. 36-38 If people who are engaged cannot control their sexual desire, it is better for them to marry. If they can control it, it is better for them to wait and to live single lives. Do we try to encourage people who give their lives to God as singles?
